This congregation, originally known as Sweet Grass Evangelical Lutheran Congregation, was organized in the home of Henry Ellingson on October 26, 1885 by Rev. Reinertson. He was sent by the Home Mission Board of the Norway-Augustana Synod to establish a preaching mission at Melville. On March 27, 1890 the congregation voted to join the United Church.
